World Cup 2022: A winning alliance with RTBF

For this new edition of the World Cup in Qatar, Dreamwall was entrusted with creating a virtual set for RTBF. We used our expertise to contribute to this major event, offering virtual camera flyovers of stadiums, portal windows, and teleportation, all broadcasted live daily from 3 PM to 10:30 PM.

CHALLENGES

Transport the public to a rooftop in Qatar, reminiscent of the site's unique environment.

Integrate various lighting moods for day, evening and night scenarios.

Implement eight different AR elements, including match identifiers, scoring, player statistics, illustrations and dynamic team compositions.

Use a virtual camera to offer viewers flights from the studio to the eight stadiums in Doha.

TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS

  • AR design and implementation:

Development of eight separate AR systems.

Integration of dynamic widgets in the LED wall for statistics and interaction with the background.

Data connecting for team composition and collecting images and names.

Introduction of avatars via a smartphone application, enabling viewers to express their opinions.

  • LED screen and background management:

XR with an LED screen behind the presenter, avoiding chromakey problems.

Virtual extension around the screen.

Choice of a 2.4 pitch LED screen for a balance between quality and price.

Placement of green walls on either side of the LED screen to inlay columnists on the wide camera.

The guests' cameras were painted green so as not to see them in the wide camera field...

  • Motor configuration:

Three motors and one controller were used for set and flyover functionality.

RESULT

Dreamwall's innovative and technically advanced solutions have resulted in a visually stunning and immersive World Cup coverage experience for RTBF. The integration of AR, LED technology and creative set design enabled a seamless fusion of virtual and physical elements. The project's success highlighted Dreamwall's expertise in breaking the boundaries of television production.
